resistance band workoutIf you have never done strength training with resistance band exercises instead of using free weights or exercise equipment then you should consult what exercises to do with your personal trainer or buy a good resistance bands workouts book (available in digital and hard copy formats). Resistance bands workouts are a great way to exercise at home and you don’t have to sacrifice strength gains. Every exercise you can do with dumbbells or a barbell can be simulated with a resistance band.

To ensure that you build muscle and lost fat in an efficient manner you will need to make sure that your resistance band training program is focused on progression and that you maintain good form throughout the exercise. If you can’t maintain good form for at least eight repetitions while doing a resistance band exercise, then the resistance band has too much tension, and you should try doing the same exercise with a resistance band with less tension. The resistance bands are color coded with the yellow and green color bands usually being the easy level.

If you find the exercise to be too easy, then use a resistance band with more tension, usually a red color band. Schedule two to three resistance training workout sessions a week, allowing for recovery time in between sessions to give your muscles time for repair and growth.

Monday my resistance band workout will usually include upper body exercises, then I will rest 2 days and do lower body exercises on the Wednesday, then on one of the remaining days of the week complete the upper body workout. Because you are doing upper body exercises two days of the week, you should train a different upper body part on the second day of the week.

Obviously you can make adjustments to this routine, and there are many fat burning resistance band exercises to choose from, but it’s a solid starting point for beginners who are looking to get started with using resistance bands in their workouts.

A recent study conducted by East Carolina University found that resistance exercise improves fat metabolism. Contrary to what you may have heard from other fitness experts, resistance exercise can be more beneficial then aerobic exercise to burn fat. Resistance training exercises increases muscular strength and lean muscle mass.

Because muscle burns more calories than fat, regular resistance band exercises will boost your metabolism. While you may be burning more calories during an aerobic workout, post exercise your metabolism rate is elevated for only a short period. In comparison, with resistance exercise its increased permanently, so you are more burning calories even when not exercising.
